Kerala Assembly is planning a two-day orientation program for MLAs this week
Ahead of the start of the budget session in the Kerala Assembly, the newly elected legislators will be briefed on the proceedings of the House in a two-day session this week. Chief Minister VD Satheesan will launch an orientation program for legislators at the Assembly complex on Wednesday. Leader of Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan will deliver the keynote address. Assembly Speaker Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan and Deputy Speaker Shanimol Osman will speak on the occasion. During Wednesday and Thursday, there will be a series of sessions on Question Time, Motion for Adjournment, Resolutions and Motions conducted according to the relevant rules and parliamentary etiquette.
They will also provide an overview of the parliamentary committees and their relevance, the e-Assembly concept and procedures related to the state budget and the effective use of the Property Development Fund. Speakers include former Lok Sabha general secretary PDT Achary. “Such orientation programs are normally held at the beginning of every new Kerala Legislative Assembly (this being the 16th UCK) to familiarize the new members with the procedures of the Assembly and the budget process,” said Shaji C. Baby, Secretary (in-charge), Kerala Legislative Assembly.
The two-day orientation program comes just ahead of the presentation of the revised State Budget 2026-27 by Mr. Satheesan on June 19. The Kerala Assembly over the years has consistently set a model for other state legislatures in the annual number of sittings and in its legislative output.
Following the UDF’s victory in the 2026 assembly polls, the newly elected legislators took formal oath as Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in the first session of the 16th Kerala Assembly on 21 May. There are several new faces in both the ruling UDF and the opposition LDF. Of the three BJP legislators, two are former Union ministers.
