The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), which earlier experimented with strategic alliances by supporting influential Independents in the district, is now actively reaching out to disaffected United Democratic Front (UDF) leaders, especially the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), ahead of the April 9 Assembly elections.
The announcement of candidates will inevitably leave some aspirants disappointed in any political party. Sensing an opportunity, the CPI(M) targeted disgruntled leaders, leaving places like Tirur, Tanur and Vallikkunnu temporarily vacant to accommodate potential suitors.
The party’s expectations seemed to be confirmed when IUML state secretary Abdurahman Randathani publicly expressed his displeasure after being denied a ticket. The CPI(M) seized the moment and reportedly offered him an opportunity to contest from a constituency of his choice as an independent, backed by the Left Democratic Front (LDF). CPI(M) politburo member A. Vijayaraghavan even praised him as a prominent and steadfast voice within the IUML.
However, after a day of uncertainty, Mr. Randathani decided to stay with IUML. He subsequently retracted his criticism of the party leadership and deleted his Facebook posts.
The offers were rejected
Undeterred, the CPI(M) continued its outreach efforts. She approached VKM Shafi, Muslim Youth League leader from Valanchery, and Riyas Mukkoli, former Malappuram Youth Congress Parliamentary Constituency President, who were reportedly disgruntled at being denied tickets. Despite their disappointment, both rejected the overtures of the CPI(M) and later confirmed that the party had contacted them.
Another name that came up was Shafi Chaliyam, an IUML leader known for often representing the party in televised debates. Although initially disheartened when state president Syed Sadikali Shihab Thangal announced the list of candidates, Mr. Shafi quickly reaffirmed his loyalty to the IUML through public statements.
Breakthrough
Despite several failed attempts, the CPI(M) seems to have made a breakthrough in Malappuram. IUML rebel Kunnath Mohammed has entered the fray in Mankada as an independent candidate against UDF candidate Manjalamkuzhi Ali, who is seeking his sixth term in the assembly.
CPI(M)’s declared candidate for Mankada, MP Alavi, on Sunday said he would be willing to step down if the party decided to back Mr. Mohammed against Mr. Ali, who had earlier served as MLA from Mankada twice with CPI(M) support before joining the IUML in 2010.
A final decision on the LDF candidate in Mankada is expected on Monday, the last day for filing nominations, which may pave the way for a closely watched contest in the constituency.
