Kerala aims to increase daily milk production to 1 million liters in three years: VD Satheesan

Inaugurating World Milk Day celebrations here on Monday, Chief Minister VD Satheesan called for measures to increase domestic milk production in the state to 1 billion liters per day in the next three years.

To achieve this, the UDF government will take measures to bridge the gap between production and demand, he said. (According to government data, Kerala’s daily milk production is 70.1 lakh liters per day, while the demand is 86 lakh litres.) Mr Satheesan also stressed the need to ensure availability of quality fodder for cattle and to expand fodder grass cultivation. The government will give priority to the milk development department, he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Bindhu Krishna said that World Milk Day highlights the importance of the dairy sector in ensuring food security, nutrition, health, sustainability, economic growth and livelihoods. She noted that the younger generation should recognize the vital role of milk and milk products in promoting good health. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations declared June 1 as World Milk Day in 2001. Since then, the day has been celebrated annually to recognize the importance of milk as a universal food. Among those present were Additional Principal Secretary (Milk Development) Minhaj Alam, Milma President KS Mani, Milma Regional Union Presidents Mani Vishwanadh and CN Valsalan Pillai.
