Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has told Cameron Green to keep it simple and not worry too much about his game after struggling in the ongoing Ashes series. Although the Aussies won the Ashes, Green’s indifferent form was cause for concern. Green scored 76 points in three Tests at an average of 19.
The all-rounder has taken just two wickets so far during the series. Green has had his fair share of injuries over the past few years, and was picked in the recent IPL auction for Rs. 25.2 crore from KKR. Ponting said that Green thinks very deeply about his own game and will eventually change a lot.
The former Australian captain told Green to repeat what he did in the domestic game in Test cricket.
“He seems to think very deeply about his own game and he likes to play with things a lot,” former Australia captain Ponting told the ICC Review.
“But if I had any advice for him, it would just be to keep things as simple as you can, think about what you’ve done in domestic cricket and take your domestic game to a Test match and back it up for a while,” he added.
Green played 35 Tests for Australia and scored 1,641 runs at an average of 32.82, with two hundreds and seven fifties. During this time he took 37 wickets at an average of 37.67. Ponting said it was still difficult to gauge the all-rounder as an international player.
“It’s actually quite difficult to gauge him as an international player. He’s averaging under 30 in Australia now. His career average is just over 30.”
“He’s made two Test hundreds in 30 Test matches. He’s had back surgery and his bowling pace is probably not what it was 12 months ago,” Ponting said.
Despite those numbers, Ponting said he believes Green can do well for Australia in Tests.
“But there’s a very complete package there if it all comes together. And we’ve seen him play some pretty remarkable innings.”
“He made an incredible 100 in New Zealand last year. He also has a 100 in India, albeit on a very, very flat pitch.”
Green will have a chance to redeem himself during the Boxing Day Test against England.
