With the elections of the local body just a few months away, the Congress of Kerala (M), the key part of the left democratic front, increases its field efforts in Central Travancore by organizing a number of seminars and symposia to emphasize urgent social problems in the region.
First, the regional party will organize a symposium that deals with a critical problem of floods along the banks of the Meenachil and Lake Vembanad and Kottayam 21 June.
According to the President of the district district of KC (m) Lopez Mathew, the symposium is to emphasize the demand for urgent formulation of complex plans to alleviate the recurring floods in the river.
According to Mr. Mathew, residents living near the main rivers, such as Meenachil and Manimala have been struggling with the threat of continuous floods in the last few years.
“Many roads, including the Ettumanur-Poonjar motorway, are often immersed, causing disturbance of traffic. Companies in cities such as Pala and Erattupetta face the risk of floods during the monsoon. The passing rivers also cause extensive damage and financial losses that are also implemented if necessary.
KC (m) claims that although the irrigation department tried to remove mud and mud from rivers and streams in several places, these measures proved to be insufficient to overcome the flood. The Meenachil River flows into the sea through the Vembanad lake. However, the depth and area of the lake has fallen disturbingly, causing it to be unable to accommodate river water.
“The news that the capacity of Vembanad Lake water has dropped by more than 80%can only be perceived with concern,” says Mr. Mathew.
KC (M) requires removal of obstacles at critical points such as Thotappally Spillway, Andhakaranazhi, Kochi Barmouth and various channels, large and small to facilitate the smoother flow of water into the sea.
In rivers and streams, mud and sand and illegal interventions in controlled streams should be removed. The permanent solution of the flood threat must be determined by the integration of the Agriculture, Fishing, Revenue, Local Government and the Office for Catastropics Adast under the leadership of the irrigation department.
The symposium, which will be connected by representatives from affected communities and subjects on subjects, will prepare a report based on proposals created during the event that will be submitted to the government for the next event.
