The Keral (M) Congress, aimed at solving the recurring floods in the Meenachil River Basin, submitted a set of recommendations to the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who also serves as the chairman of the State Adaster Administration.
The proposals, presented under the topic “New approaches to flood control”, were developed from seminars on the whole district, professional symposia and community consultations. The delegation led by the President of the KC (M) Lopez Mathew together with the Minister of Water Resources Rosha Augustine handed over the recommendations and led discussions with the main minister.
According to Mr. Mathew, the interviews reviewed the ongoing projects of the irrigation department on flood controls and protection of the banks of the river, while emphasizing the need for long -term, multidimensional strategies. Key designs include curbs of excessive sand mining in rivers such as Meenachil, Manimala and Muvattpuzha, and urgent implementation of the 108 Crore project to clean Lake Vembanad.
The delegation also emphasized the hardships facing traders and disturbances of transport in cities such as Pala and Erattupetta during the flood season. They insisted that the protection of the banks of the river was preferred by a high -level committee, which has already formed under the leadership of the main minister.
Detailed reports also included problems related to floods in the western parts of Kottayam and at the top of Kuttanad, especially those associated with the Muvattpuzha River. The report also demanded cleaning, maintaining and protecting all public water bodies in the district, along with strict measures against interventions.
With local elections in the body around the corner, environmental concerns appear as a key political topic. While KC (m) sharpened its focus on the Meenachil basin, the competing fraction led by PJ Joseph will gather around the deteriorating state of Vembanad Lake.
