Kalvakuntla Kavitha’s political group, named “Telangana Rashtra Sena (TRS)”, may face legal hurdles due to the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) strict norms on party names that resemble existing or older political parties.
This assumes significance against the backdrop of the transformation of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) into the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in 2022. Although the TRS nomenclature is not officially used, it retains a strong political connotation among voters in Telangana. Sources said the Election Commission of India (ECI) is looking into the “voter confusion” aspect of approving party names, looking into phonetic similarity, visual similarity and use of common abbreviations.
