K. Kasturirangan, a space scientist who died on Friday, had a clear connection with people in the Mallad area, located at the foot of Western Ghats. As the head of the working group at a high level appointed by the central government, Dr. Kasturirangan Report on Western Ghats in April 2013. He and other members of the Group before the report were visited by parts of the area.
Since the group submitted their message, the name of the scientist has been part of the daily discussions in the villages of the region. The recommendation of this report has led to many protests and discussions among people who are afraid of their consequences. However, some environmentalists fighting to maintain Western Ghat finds the implementation of his report necessary to protect hotspot of biodiversity.
What message did she say
Report Dr. Casturirangana has proposed that 37% of Western Ghats should be identified as an environmentally sensitive area (ESA). In Karnataka, this would include 20,668 km2 km, over 1,576 villages extended over 10 districts. Local people feared the consequences of the ace announcement.
Elected representatives, regardless of their political affiliation, opposed recommendations. After the recommendations, MOEF and climate change have issued six notifications. The proposal of the announcement prohibits mining, mining and mining of sand in ESA. It supports organic farming in the area and forbids construction projects measuring 20,000 squares above. However, the state government rejected all six notifications.
Ti.na. Srinivas, a well -known face fighting for the rehabilitation of people displaced by the Sharavati project, said he respected Dr. Kasturirangana for his contributions to the nation as a cosmic scientist. “However, his role in the Western Ghats Committee was not acceptable,” he said.
Mr. Srinivas said that the report was impressed by the views of the inhabitants of forests who contributed to the preservation of forests for several generations. His recommendations, however, indicated that they have a role in global warming.
On the other hand, not all environmentalists completely supported his report. They felt that his news “diluted” the original recommendation of Professor Madhav Gadgil, under whose guidance MoEF was a panel of an expert on the ecology of Western Ghats.
“Could save ghats”
Akhilesh Chipli, an environmentalist based in Sagar, said he opposed Kasturirangan’s report. “The central government consisted of a high-level working group only to dilute the report of Gadgil. However, governments are not ready to carry out its recommendations now. Sometimes I felt that if the message Kasturirangan was effectively performed, Western Ghats could be protected if not a gadgil report.”
