Karnataka will soon get the second largest international cricket stadium in India
Features of the new stadium
The 75-acre stadium will include a cricket ground, athletics track and 400-meter field, an indoor sports arena for badminton, basketball, volleyball, table tennis and more, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, changing rooms, showers, toilets, a diving pool and a practice pool for novice swimmers.
In addition to retail stores, restaurants and underground garages, a convention center including an auditorium, exhibition hall, hall of fame and conference seminar room will be created. It will also include a health center, fitness center, nutrition center, athletic dormitory, physiotherapy center and others.
Karnataka will soon have the second largest cricket stadium after Gujarat in Indlawadi village, Surya Nagar 4th phase, in Anekal Taluk.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced this after laying the foundation stone for the International Cricket Stadium and Sports Complex at a program organized by the Housing Department and the Karnataka Housing Board at Suryanagar on Saturday (May 23, 2026) morning.
The stadium will have a capacity of 80,000 people along with other facilities for players and spectators. Currently, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, with a capacity of 90,000 people, is the largest stadium in India.
4000 acres acquired
“A total of 4,000 acres have been acquired from farmers, of which 75 acres will be used for the construction of an international cricket stadium and the rest will be used for construction of houses and plots to be allotted to farmers and other applicants. By taking the initiative to build an international standard stadium in Suryanagar, we have paved the way for comprehensive development of the area, job creation and economic growth, including sports Mr.
He added, “After the stampede at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru claimed 11 lives during RCB’s victory celebrations, we decided to build a bigger stadium with a large seating capacity. Ours will be the second largest stadium in India. It was a much-needed infrastructure for the state to promote sports and provide opportunities to young talent in the state and the country.”
The move comes despite opposition from some farmers and environmentalists. The farmers said that the area for the proposed stadium lies close to the Karadikkal-Mahadeshwara wildlife corridor and that building a large stadium in the area would have an adverse impact on the environment and wildlife.
But the CM justified his decision and said, “The value of the land here was low before the acquisition of land by the government for the construction of the stadium, which has now doubled. A gaming village (Kreeda Grama) will also be built near the stadium in the coming days.”
He explained that there will be no injustice to the farmers whose properties have been acquired, saying: “Each farmer will be given land according to the size of the land he surrendered, with a 50:50 share between the farmer and the government. They can sell it at higher prices as prices have now doubled, or build on their property that has been allotted to them.”
‘Namma Mane’ Project
Apart from laying the foundation stone of the stadium, the Chief Minister also launched the ‘Namma Mane Project’ by laying the foundation stone for Surya Shine and Surya Divine housing schemes. He also symbolically handed over documents for allotment of seats through the lottery system to some applicants.
Highlighting the role of the Housing Department in the state, the CM said, “The fact that the Housing Department and the KHB, which were only building houses so far, are now going ahead with the construction of an 80,000-seater stadium is a vision of progress.”
He also assured that the Housing Department as well as the KHB will construct the stadium after auctioning the vacant sites across the state. These sites have been allocated to people, but due to non-payment they will be auctioned off to generate revenue. “KHB is estimated to earn ₹20,000 crore from the sale of vacant KHB seats. The money from this will be used for the construction of the stadium, which is estimated to cost ₹943 crore.”
Apart from the development of this area, administrative approval has also been given for the construction of Jigani Hobli main road connecting Suryanagar and other villages.
Mr. Shivakumar said, “By building this stadium and developing Suryanagar in Anekal, we are providing Cauvery drinking water to every house, job and sports complex in your district.”
He also emphasized that this infrastructural development will definitely help ease traffic in Bengaluru and bring international as well as national players to the stadium to expose people to the ecosystem of sports.
Give cabinet minister rank to Shivanna: supporters
Amidst reports of a cabinet reshuffle in the Karnataka government, a group of supporters raised slogans holding placards in support of Anekal MLA, B Shivanna, causing disruption while CM Siddaramaiah was addressing people. They demanded that Mr. Siddaramaiah should allot ministerial berth to Shivanna. However, the CM, losing his cool, said, “Don’t you have the common sense not to shout when I am giving a speech? Allocation of ministerial berths in the cabinet is a different matter altogether. We cannot discuss it here.”
Despite this, the supporters rushed to the exit with the same demands and the CM and DCM boarded their cars at the end of the event.
