
The residents on Monday organized a protest against the Sharavathi Pumped Storage Project (PSP) project in Sagar, Shivamogg. They urged the state government to abandon the project with regard to the harm that it could cause Western Ghats.
People who gathered under the auspices of Sharavathi’s Committee for the Combat Committee for the Storage Project project took a protest march from the Ganapati temple to Gandhi Maidan, where they organized a meeting.
Abhinava Channabasava Swama of Mulegadde Math, addressing the assembly, said the proposed PSP would prove to be a deadly button for people depending on the Sharavathi River. If the PSP could be executed, the government would introduce a project to bring Sharavathi water to Bengalur, he said.
Pride urged the government to respond to the feelings of people on this matter and resign a project.
Former Minister Hartal Halappa said that environmentalists should stand next to people displaced projects of the Mallad Region. When some environmentalists moved to the courts, the question of granting land was affected. “If we do not support people hit by projects earlier, they will hardly support the fight against fresh projects,” Zavil.
Akhilesh Chippali, an environmentalist, said that Karnataka Power Corporation Limited, a project proposer, obscured the project to hide the information. They did not propose better alternative technologies to address energy deficiency because the project included huge investments, he said.
Mr. Chippali said that the power needed to pump water from the Gerusoppa reservoir to the Talakalale tank within the project was around 2,500 MW. However, the amount of energy generated by the project was only 2,000 MW. “It’s as if we spent 125 GBP for earning 100,” he said.
Raith Sangh’s leader said that the implementation of the project without accepting the opinions of people living in the project was against the basic principles of democracy.
The Protest was attended by the chairman of the city council of Sagar City Maitri Patil, Vice -President Savita Vas and others.
