With an aim to make Karnataka’s power sector more transparent, accountable, accurate and faster, Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) is building a comprehensive, unified, centralized digital platform KPTCL-GTD (Generation, Transmission and Distribution).

V. Ram Prasath Manohar, Managing Director, KPTCL said, “The platform is being developed and steps are being taken to integrate data and workflows across departments and institutions. The main objective is to bring large transactions involving power generation companies, Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL), electricity supply companies (Escoms) and other stakeholders to KPTCL-GTD.”

Mr. Manohar said processes like power purchase and sale, billing, energy reconciliation, banking, open access and financial settlement, which were previously handled separately and involved significant manual intervention, will be digitized and automated.

This would reduce manual intervention and increase transparency, accuracy, accountability and speed in energy sector transactions, he noted, noting that all data related to energy transactions, billing, energy reconciliation and financial settlement will be available for real-time viewing and monitoring.

Mr. Manohar said, “This will help reduce invoicing discrepancies, account reconciliation delays and data inconsistencies while enabling faster transactions and financial settlements.”

According to him, electricity producers, electricity buyers, transmission companies and electricity supply companies through KPTCL-GTD will be able to manage relevant data and transactions through a common digital system.

Further, it aims to integrate the Meter Reading Interface (MRI) into this digital platform, which will enable direct acquisition of meter data along with 15-minute block-level data and interface point information, reducing reliance on manual data entry and calculations.

A digital signature and digital approval system is also proposed for accounts and related documents to further reduce paper and manual processes on this platform.

He said: “Once implemented, the system will improve the overall efficiency of the power sector, reduce procedural and business losses and streamline revenue realization.”

Minister of Energy and Tourism KJ George said: “The energy sector comprises several institutions and processes, from generation to distribution. We aim to bring key processes that were previously handled separately and manually to a single digital platform using advanced technology. This will make transactions more transparent, faster and seamless for all stakeholders, including power producers, buyers, transmission and distribution companies.”
