Amid rising incidents of policemen themselves being implicated in criminal cases across Karnataka, state police chief MA Saleem has issued a stern warning to unit leaders and directed them to enforce discipline and prevent misbehavior in the ranks.
In a circular issued on Friday, Mr. Saleem said the police’s involvement in criminal activities tarnishes the image of the department. He warned that any officer or employee caught in illegal conduct would face strict disciplinary action. It laid down a series of guidelines for unit leaders to strengthen internal vigilance and accountability. He said unit leaders will be held accountable for shortcomings in their implementation.
This is the second such circular in two months, which indicates the seriousness of the crisis in the resort.
According to the circular, all unit heads must maintain strict supervision over the police personnel under their command. They should create awareness among employees about ethical standards, legal obligations and consequences of corruption and crime, regularly conduct training and sensitization programs.
It further said that senior officers are required to immediately report any information about misconduct, illegal activity or criminal behavior by police officers to the police headquarters.
The circular directed unit leaders to address factors that may affect morale or lead to ethical misconduct, strictly enforce the existing code of conduct and ensure that there are no loopholes in implementation that could allow misconduct.
Overall, Mr. Saleem directed unit leaders to promote departmental integrity and foster a culture of accountability.
“The protection of the department’s reputation is the primary duty of every officer,” the circular said, urging all units to maintain discipline and strengthen public confidence.
More than 135 police officers of various ranks, including 10 inspectors and 82 police personnel, have been suspended this year for their alleged involvement in crimes ranging from robbery to corruption, from drug smuggling to dereliction of duty and insubordination.
This shows a lack of discipline and the rise of corrupt practices, said a senior police officer. Despite repeated reminders and circulars issued in this regard, such incidents are increasing, he added.
