Leader of Opposition in Karnataka Legislative Council Chalavadi Narayanaswamy has accused the Congress government of “blackmailing and cheating” farmers and consumers over the recent hike in Nandini milk prices. He alleged that the Siddaramaiah-led administration had cited the welfare of farmers to justify the hike, while failing to keep its poll promises on subsidies.
The Karnataka LoP was hit by the Congress government over the hike in milk prices in Nandini
Questioning the government’s decision to raise milk prices by ₹8 per litre, a senior BJP leader claimed that the hike was presented as a measure to benefit dairy farmers ₹1 go to the milk company and ₹7 handed over to farmers.
“The Congress played its card very cleverly when it announced that it would increase the price by only o ₹8, of which Re 1 will go to the company, and ₹7 will be given to farmers. In another way, you increased the price by ₹13. How much of this amount will you give to the farmers?” asked Narayanaswamy, according to ANI.
He further accused the state government of using the price revision to pressure farmers while questioning its management approach.
“This is nothing but extortion. You are blackmailing the farmers of this country and state. What kind of administration is this? You are defrauding the farmers as well.”
Narayanaswamy also criticized the Congress government for its election manifesto commitments, contrasting it with the ruling party’s promise ₹7 subsidy s ₹5 subsidies announced by the previous government.
“We issued a subsidy from ₹5 while your manifesto promised ₹7. Where is the promise now? Isn’t that cheating the public? As a result, farmers and the general public are angry with this government,” he said.
Warning of an escalating opposition reaction, Narayanaswamy said the BJP would organize protests against the revised milk prices.
“We will protest against this price increase,” he added.
