Police have arrested a 50-year-old man who allegedly murdered his 17-year-old daughter after opposing plans to marry her off to his wife’s relative.

The incident was reported from Nimbenahalli village in Kallambella police station limits in Tumakuru district.

According to the police, the accused, identified as Thimmarayappa, opposed the proposal to marry his minor daughter to one of his wife’s relatives after she turned 18.

Police said frequent arguments broke out between the couple over the matter as the girl’s mother was allegedly adamant about the alliance.

In a fit of rage, Thimmarayappa allegedly took his daughter near a well near their house, pushed her into it and dropped a large stone on her to ensure her death.

Police said the accused later picked up the body from the well and buried it at an isolated place before returning home. After that, he allegedly acted as if the girl was lost.

After the family failed to locate the teenager, a missing person report was filed with the police. During the investigation, officers learned that the girl was last seen with her father.

The police became suspicious and detained Thimmarayappa for questioning. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to the crime and revealed the place where the body was buried.

The police then exhumed the body and sent it for an autopsy on Sunday. The accused was taken into custody for further questioning.
