Members of Karnataka Rajya Raith Sangh and Haris Sen on Tuesday organized a protest in Shivamogg against the Sharavathi’s drawn project and urged the state government to abandon the same in the interest of Western Ghat and its rich biological diversity.
Farmers under the leadership of state President KRS KT Gangadhar organized Dharna in front of the Commissioner’s deputy and presented the memorandum representatives of the Commissioner.
Demonstrators stated that the government should take the local public before the project. The government has so far submitted a detailed report on the project before the public, they said. When other alternative advanced energy generation technologies were available without damage to the forest and disruption of wild animals, there was no need to go to the project, they added.
Farmers also claimed that the project would require a decrease in a large number of trees. The implementation of such huge projects in the forest would result in a landslide during the rain, they said. Given the safety of the locals and the importance of maintaining local flora and fauna, the project should not be carried out, they should be required.
The President of the KRRS Yashwanth Rao Ghorpade and others were present.
