The Karnataka High Court on Saturday (October 17) directed the Dharwad district authorities to take appropriate steps to ensure that the lives and property of residents of Mayuri Estate, Keshwapur, Hubballi do not face any threat due to the contained protests by farmers’ organizations demanding higher price of sugarcane.

A division bench of Justices Anu Sivaraman and KS Bharath Kumar issued the directions while disposing of a writ petition filed by Sangamnath Hanji and other residents seeking directions to the district authorities.

The petitioners alleged that protests, rallies and dharnas were organized in their residential locality thereby denying them their rights under Article 19(1)(c). (d) and Article 21. They sought authority to direct the authorities to consider their submissions and ensure that such agitations are held only at designated places, in accordance with the High Court’s directions issued in this regard dated August 12 and ordered back to 2022.

During the hearing, the Additional Advocate General (AAG) assured the Bench of appropriate steps to regulate the protests.

On the assurance of the AAG, the Bench disposed of the petition asking the authorities to take steps to protect the rights of the residents of the locality.
