A farmer who was injured in a tiger attack while combing at HD Kote on Thursday lost his sight permanently as the facial and nerve injuries he sustained were extensive.
This came to light when Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited a private hospital in Mysuru where a farmer, identified as Made Gowda, is undergoing treatment. Mr. Siddaramaiah held talks with the forest department, hospital authorities and family members of the victim on Friday.
When the chief minister was informed that the farmer could not see again, he directed the forest department not only to bear the full cost of the hospital but also to pay compensation to the victim. “Compensation should not be considered as relief but the amount should be calculated to refer to the loss of life or livelihood,” he added.
The incident took place in Badaganpura village bordering the forests. A farmer was in his field when a tiger pounced on him and crushed him.
A large crowd gathered to watch the combing operation in which the elephant Bheema and others were pressed into service to corner the tiger.
During the commotion, a tiger emerged from the standing crops and ran towards the crowd. Several people climbed a nearby tree to avoid the approaching tiger, which pounced on the farmer and struck him in the face, leaving deep gashes. The combing was done following complaints from local villagers about cattle killing in recent days.
Minister in charge of Mysuru district HC Mahadevappa and others were present at the hospital.
