S. Bangarappa Foundation and S. Bangarappa Vichara Vedike will jointly organize a day-long program in Shivamogga’s Sorab taluk to mark the 93rd birth anniversary of former Chief Minister S. Bangarappa on Sunday, October 26. The program will be held at Bangaradhama, Bangarappa’s memorial.
Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Venugopal Naik, president of Bangarappa Vichara Vedike said the organizers will honor achievers from various fields with ‘Bangara’ award on the occasion. This year, the foundation elected retired Kannada professor and writer Kale Gowda Nagavara, retired IPS officer L. Revanasiddaiah, folk artist Radhabai Madara and theater artist Jevargi Rajanna.
The event will begin with a seminar on Bangarappa’s contribution to society. Mr. Nagavara and poets SG Siddaramaiah and HL Pushpa will participate in the seminar.
Food and Civil Supplies Minister KH Muniyappa, former minister and Congress leader RV Deshpande, Labor Minister Santosh Lad and others are scheduled to attend the award ceremony. Madhu Bangarappa, Minister for School Education and Bangarappa’s son, will preside over the programme, Mr Naik said.
Bangaradhama, the event venue, was inaugurated in 2023 and is spread over an area of 1.25 acres. The state government recently declared it a tourist spot.
The memorial consists of a well-maintained garden, clock tower, footpath, amphitheater etc. HR Kiran, who works for the foundation, said 250 to 300 people visit the memorial daily. “People who come to see Jog Falls take a break at Sorab and visit the memorial. It attracts a significant number of tourists,” he said. Mr. Kiran added that the memorial was built and maintained by a foundation headed by Mr. Madhu.
Bangarappa represented the Sorab constituency in the State Assembly from 1967 to 1992 and served as Chief Minister from 1990 to 1992. He died in 1992.
