UT Speaker Khader on Wednesday expressed concern over the incidents and heated debates that took place in the assembly after the governor delivered a curtailed speech in a joint session of the legislature, all members of the house to introspect their conduct.
“The incidents and debates that took place in the House after the Governor addressed a joint session of the Legislature on January 22 sent the wrong message to the public. Our behavior as members of the House should not only be good and in line with constitutional norms, but also help preserve the dignity of the House and its members. As members of the House, we should all conduct this inspection.”
He was referring to the chaos in the joint session after the governor cut short his speech and left.
Referring to the deadlock in the House — with BJP and JD(S) members accusing ruling Congress members of insulting the Governor and ruling Congress members accusing the Governor of insulting the national anthem — the Speaker asked members to end the matter and continue the debate on the motion of thanks to the Governor.
The Speaker, who issued a ruling on Tuesday asking members to abstain from the governor’s actions during the debate, reiterated it on Wednesday.
The stalemate in the assembly ended with this statement from the speaker.
Earlier, the House witnessed pandemonium during the lunch session when BJP and JD(S) members insisted on their demand that Law Minister HK Patil provide call details related to his allegation that Lok Bhavan was receiving instructions over phone from the Union Home Ministry.
Although the opposition MPs demanded that the law minister withdraw his statement unless he provided details of the call, the law minister refused to budge, terming his statement as an accusation. He stuck to his stance that it was left to the Union Home Ministry and the Lok Bhavan to respond to his allegations.
