Kanthapuram seeks to ban alcohol

Kanthapuram Sunni leader AP Aboobacker Musliar has urged the United Democratic Front (UDF) government not to take steps to promote alcohol consumption in the state.

He was participating in a function here on Thursday (June 25, 2026) to mark the foundation day and centenary celebrations of Samastha Kerala Jem-iyyathul Ulama.

Mr. Musliar suggested that the government should implement the prohibition. He criticized the move to reduce tax rates on low-volume alcoholic drinks and said the proposal should be withdrawn. Mr. Musliar also urged the government to abandon the PM SHRI scheme. “Both the UDF and the Left Democratic Front should remember that they have opposed her before,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mr Musliar expressed his support for the Home Office’s ‘Operation Toofan’ campaign against substance abuse. He said that Samastha will implement schemes to make marginalized people self-reliant. He would oppose extremism, religious reformation and anti-religious propaganda. Extensive campaigns will also be launched in the service sector, he added.
