Kannan CS Warrier, Director, Kerala Forest Research Institute (KSCSTE-KFRI), has received the International Iconic Scientist Award from Scientific Laurels, a platform for research recognition and academic support registered under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India, in recognition of his significant contributions to forest science, forest genetics, tree improvement, biodiversity conservation and sustainable forest management.
With more than three decades of research experience, Dr. Warrier became a pioneer in the field of clonal forestry and the improvement of forest genetic resources. His development of three high-yielding, salt-tolerant clones of Casuarina equisetifolia enabled the productive use of degraded sodic soils, created opportunities for agroforestry, enhanced the livelihoods of small and marginal farmers, and provided sustainable sources of wood for pulp, paper and other industries.
His identification of 139 excellent, non-warping Plus trees of Thespesia populnea (Poovarasu) and 155 trees of Haldina cordifolia (Kadambu) created valuable genetic resources for the production of quality timber. He has also developed cost-effective propagation techniques and advanced innovations in clonal seed orchards and digital forest analysis, including a patented method for estimating mean tree diameter using digital imagery.
Biodiversity protection
Among the contributions of Dr. Warriera’s biodiversity conservation efforts include documenting the 1,128 sacred groves in Alappuzha district and highlighting their rich botanical diversity, comparable to that of the Pacific Valley. He also devoted more than two decades to the protection and restoration of his ancestral sacred grove at Haripad. His broader research includes mangrove conservation, forest landscape restoration, river rejuvenation and sustainable forest resource management.
Dr. Warrier has published 327 scientific papers and contributed to national forest assessments, policy initiatives and international research collaborations. The renowned musician has composed several environmental anthems for the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change and the Keralam Forest Department and performed ‘Music from Wood’ for the United Nations FAO International Day of Forests in 2022.
