Mysuru MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar on Sunday said Kannada should always be given priority in the state and stressed the need to protect and promote the language. At the same time, he emphasized the importance of learning other languages in order to remain competitive and achieve success in life.
Inaugurating the Karnataka Rajyotsava celebrations at the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) here, the MP said that knowing more than one language gives an advantage to individuals as language skills can be effectively used for personal and professional success. “While learning other languages is also necessary, Kannada must always remain a priority in our state,” he said.
He noted that the Mysuru-based CIIL has the potential to become a model institution in promoting all Indian languages while maintaining linguistic diversity.
Referring to development and infrastructure, Mr. Wadiyar said that the time has come to realize the aspirations of Kannadigas by making effective use of the infrastructure being created. How best this infrastructure is used for economic growth should remain the focus, he said, adding that consideration needs to be given to whether the facilities created by governments are being used meaningfully.
He emphasized the need to protect the culture and heritage of Karnataka. “If the goal of Viksit Bharat is to be achieved, Viksit Karnataka is equally important,” he said.
Expressing concern, the MP said that Karnataka is gradually losing its importance as other states have taken the lead in technological advancement. He gave examples like Hyderabad, Warangal and other cities where new age projects like Quantum City and Aero City are being developed. While Karnataka has been at the forefront of the IT revolution and has made significant progress, he said the recent setbacks need to be addressed by creating a strong and robust system to regain lost ground.
In his speech, Mr. Wadiyar emphasized the need to adequately appreciate the contribution of historian and writer Aluru Venkata Rao to the Karnataka Ekikarana (unification) movement. He said that Rao’s role must be represented at par with other leaders and added that the credit for Ekikarana must be rightfully given to him.
CIIL Director Shailendra Mohan, Vice Chancellor NK Lokanath, Project Director Center of Excellence for Studies in Classical Kannada Talwar and others were present.
