The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is set to welcome back Kane Williamson, one of the most respected cricketers of the modern era. However, fans might be surprised to learn that the New Zealand stalwart won’t be showcasing his batting prowess on the field this time. Williamson will indeed be part of IPL 2025, but in a brand-new role.
Kane Williamson to start a new innings in IPL 2025
After going unsold at the IPL 2025 mega auction in Jeddah last November, Williamson has found a fresh way to stay involved in the tournament. The former New Zealand captain has been signed by Star Sports as a commentator for the upcoming season, which begins on March 22.
Known for his elegant batting style, calm demeanor, and cricketing intelligence, Williamson will make his commentary debut during the highly anticipated match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). His ability to provide insightful and composed analysis makes him a valuable addition to the IPL commentary team.

Unsold in IPL 2025 but available in PSL
While IPL franchises passed on Williamson, his talent was recognized elsewhere. The 34-year-old was picked up by Karachi Kings for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025, which starts on April 11. His inclusion in the Karachi-based squad underscores his continued demand in T20 leagues despite his IPL snub.
Williamson’s absence from IPL 2025 was influenced by factors such as limited participation in recent seasons due to injuries and franchises favoring younger, more aggressive players. However, his involvement in PSL 2025 demonstrates that he still has much to contribute to the T20 format.
With his transition to the commentary box for IPL 2025 and his active role in PSL 2025, Williamson continues to be a significant presence in the cricketing world, both on and off the field.
