Founder Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) Kamal Haasan on Wednesday refused to apologize for his comment “Kannada came from Tamil”, which he did during an interview with Shiva Rajkumar during the sound opening of Thug Life in Chennai recently.
Mr. Haasan, who spoke to the promotional event for the Thug Life in Kerala, said the comment was “out of love” and he would apologize for it.
“What I said was out of love and what many historians taught me. Tamil Nadu is a place open. He is one of the very rare states where Menon and Reddy took care of our main minister. Tamilians were our main minister. They said they were talking about it.
During the recent opening event, Mr. Haasan kindly remembered his connection with Kannada Cinema, Rajkumar, Mr. Shiva Rajkumar, and made a commentary on Cannada, which has since evoked controversy, with political parties in Karnataka.
“When I was 21 years old, Rajkumar Anna praised me for my performance. And every time I met him, he praised me in front of others. When I did Raja Paarvai, he applauded for the first shot. Tamil … So you are also part of it,” said Mr. Haasan.
