Justin Baldoni, the actor and director known for his emotional and often grueling projects, has opened up about his experiences filming the new movie with Blake Lively, “Honest Thief”. In a recent interview, Baldoni admitted that the grueling production schedule and the intense physical and emotional demands of the role left him feeling exhausted.
The 34-year-old actor, known for his role in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” and his critically-acclaimed documentary series “Five Feet Apart”, stated that he has never felt as drained as he did after wrapping up the production of “Honest Thief”. “I’ve never been one to take a break or ask for help when I need it, but after this experience, I realize how important it is to take care of yourself”, he confessed.
Baldoni revealed that he had to physically transform himself for the role, gaining a significant amount of muscle mass and altering his physical appearance. This process, combined with the emotional toll of playing the character, took a severe toll on his body and mind.
“I feel like I’m at a crossroads, and I’m trying to figure out who I am without this role,” he shared. “It’s like I’m trying to separate myself from this character and say, ‘I’m not a cheater anymore, I’m just Justin again.'”
Baldoni also talked about the stigma surrounding taking a break or admitting to being overwhelmed. “It’s weird because people look at you and expect you to be this superhuman, unstoppable machine, and I’m like, ‘Guys, I’m human!’ We’re not superhuman, we’re human, and sometimes we need to admit when we need help or a break,” he said.
“Honest Thief”, which was released in 2020, received mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike. The movie, directed by John Cho, tells the story of a thief who decides to come out of retirement for one final job, but is forced to flee when his actions are exposed. The film has been praised for its performances, particularly those of Lively and Baldoni.
Despite the mixed reception of the movie, Baldoni is determined to learn from the experience and move forward, both as an actor and a person. “I think what I’m most proud of is that I did it. I did the most challenging role I’ve ever done, and I came out on the other side,” he concluded.
Justin Baldoni’s candor about his exhaustion and struggle to disconnect from his role has sparked a vital conversation about mental health, self-care, and the importance of prioritizing one’s well-being. His vulnerability serves as a reminder that even the strongest and most talented among us need help and support.
