The judiciary of Dy Chandrachud, who served as 50. The main judge of India, explained on Sunday that he did not intend to “stay infinitely” at 5, Krishna Menon Marg, determined by the residence of the chief judge of India.
The former chief judge who retired in November 2024 after a two-year term-a long-time period for decades-reacting to the media reports that the Supreme Court administration wrote to the government and urged him to be accepted “without further delay”.
“We are not here to stay infinite. I made it clear that I would not stay infinite,” Chandrachud Hindu justice said.
He said that after retirement he offered to return to his previous accommodation in Transit, Tughlaq Road and told his immediate successor, the judiciary Sanjiv Khanna.
“I have never moved since my transit accommodation since I was appointed judge of the Supreme Court in May 2016 until I was named the main judge of India.
He added that Judge Khanna, who was looking for an extension, wrote on April 28, because he was looking for rented accommodation in Delhi since January.
“Our real challenge is that we have two children who have special needs. They need ramps. Even to enter the bathroom we need a door wide enough to accommodate their carts. Girls are 16 and 14. They want to do everything on their own. Do not forget these things.
He said that his daughters, Priyanka and Mahi, suffer from a rare genetic condition called non -water myopathy and treatment in Aiims. Recently, the family had to set up the ICU basic device at home after his older daughter had experienced a serious respiratory anxiety during a trip to Shimly and was accepted at ICCU for 44 days.
Judge Chandrachud said that Khann had not received his answer to his letter 28. April and Judge Khanna has retired since then in May 2025.
“This house was previously in the Supreme Court fund. The court returned it because no judge was willing to repair it, because its repairs and renovation would take time. The government told me that the public work department would make basic repairs and gave me the property by June 30,” he said.
He added that during the last June in June he explained his situation to the Supreme Court registrary, noting that he could not commit to private rent for one year when he would need accommodation for only a month.
“I explained that since I was assigned to me, I couldn’t look for a private house, because every landlord would like to rent for one year. I can’t afford to luxury to take the house for one year when we probably occupy it for only a month (until the renovation of the allocated house),” he said.
Despite these restrictions, Judge Chandrachud said he had explored the accommodation and even approached hotels for long -term stays, but accessibility remained a problem.
“But there are steps and no ramps. That meant we had to raise girls whenever we had to take them in or out of the accommodation.
Judge Chandrachud stated that he had not yet received any communication from the Supreme Court’s letter. He added that the provision of an extension or alternative accommodation to the former main judge should not be considered “great kindness”.
“As a judge, we are focused on our work until the last day of our tenure. You live your life as a judge for many years that it takes time to have your arrangements if you don’t have a house in the city,” said Chandrachud.
He said that there were precedents of judges Cjis and the Supreme Retirement court who have prolonged their stay in official bungalows. Pursuant to the rule 3b of the rules of judges (amendment) of the Supreme Court, 2022, CJI could be assigned a type VII bungalow, a level below 5, Krishna Menon Marg Bungalow, for a maximum period of six months after retirement.
Justice Chandrachud pointed out an example in the past when CJI retired remained in the assigned accommodation, and said he did not want such a kind of freedom.
“I just want to have some breathing space to find out what my paid capacity to find accommodation is really … When you retire, there will be many people who will say you will do very well as a consultant or arbitrator, but ultimately you know that you can find on the professional service market.
