Jurgen Klopp has appointed a German coach with a deal until 2030 at the World Cup

Germany have appointed former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp as their new head coach, with the 59-year-old signing a contract that will keep him in charge until the 2030 World Cup. Klopp succeeds Julian Nagelsmann following Germany’s disappointing exit from the 2026 World Cup.

The German Football Association (DFB) turned to Klopp immediately after Nagelsmann stepped down, appointing one of the country’s most successful modern managers to revive a national team that has failed to progress past the round of 16 in each of the last three World Cups.

After his unveiling on Friday, Klopp said that leading the national team was of unique importance and expressed his excitement at taking on the role.

“The national team unites us Germans in a way that almost nothing else can. That’s what makes this task so special for me,” Klopp said.

The appointment marks Klopp’s first coaching role since leaving Liverpool in 2024. The German, who initially stepped down from the job due to fatigue, said he now feels refreshed and ready for the challenge after spending the past year and a half as Red Bull’s head of global football.

KLOPP RETURNS TO THE KOPPER

Klopp’s appointment ends his break from front-line coaching after leaving Liverpool following a trophy-laden nine-year spell. During his time at Anfield, he transformed the club into one of Europe’s dominant powers, winning the Premier League, Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup and two League Cups.

The former Borussia Dortmund boss also confirmed the addition of trusted assistants Pep Lijnders and Peter Krawietz to his backroom team, while ex-Dortmund midfielder Sven Bender has also been included in the coaching staff. Former Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker is expected to become Germany’s sporting director from January.

GERMANY EYE FRESH START

Klopp faces an immediate challenge as he attempts to rebuild confidence after another disappointing World Cup campaign. Germany crashed out after defeat to Paraguay, extending an unwanted run of three consecutive World Cups without reaching the knockout stage beyond the round of 16.

His first assignment will come in the UEFA Nations League, where Germany will face the Netherlands, Greece and Serbia in four games at the turn of September and October. In addition to those matches, Klopp will oversee Germany’s preparations for Euro 2028 qualifiers and ultimately lead the team’s 2030 World Cup campaign.
