A Delhi court on Tuesday (Nov 3, 2026) issued a notice to the city police regarding the Congress MP and rejected Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam’s plea for anticipatory bail in a sexual harassment case.

Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh asked the Delhi Police to respond and said no coercive action would be taken against Mr. Akoijam till the next hearing on November 5.

The court also directed the Investigating Officer (IO) to appear with the file on the next date of hearing.

The judge said the request of the Member of Parliament for Inner Manipur would be considered on that date.

In October, JNU fired Professor Akoyama over allegations of sexual harassment. But the professor called his dismissal a “witch hunt” and raised questions about due process.

On October 12, the Delhi Police registered an FIR against Mr. Akoijam days after he was sacked from service.

On Monday (November 2, 2026), the Delhi High Court stayed JNU’s order to terminate Mr. Akoijam’s services and fixed the matter for next hearing in January 2027.

At least 11 female students reportedly filed sexual harassment complaints against the professor in May. The complainants alleged that Mr. Akoijam invited students to his dormitory on the pretext of a meeting or assembly and attempted to sexually harass them. Some students also alleged that he made obscene and inappropriate remarks during class.

An FIR was lodged in this regard at the Vasant Kunj North police station based on the complaint and documents submitted by JNU’s Chief Security Officer (CSO).

According to the FIR, the evaluations and observations recorded by the internal committee (IC) members of the university were handed over to the police after an internal investigation.

In the complaint, the CZSO said that the IC had conducted an investigation into the allegations made by the various complainants and recorded its findings, assessment and comments on the matter.

“Allegations against Professor Angomch Bimol Akoijam, Center for Studies of Social Systems, School of Social Sciences, JNU, were examined by an internal committee and after consideration of witnesses, defense witnesses and other material, recorded,” the FIR said.
