The late night host Jimmy Kimmel will return to the air on Tuesday after being temporarily taken after a controversy over comments on the recent assassination of the conservative influence of Charlie Kirk.
Kimmel faced criticism for supposedly “offensive and insensitive” because of the notes that were made on his show last Monday. In this episode, he accused President Donald Trump and his allies to try to earn money from Kirka’s death for political profit.
“We came across a few new minims with a desperate gang Maga, who desperately tried to characterize the child who murdered Charlie Kirk like anything else than one of them and was doing everything in their power to earn political points,” Kimmel said.
Disney confirmed that Kimmel will continue to broadcast in his regular period and will end a short suspension that has caused an extensive discussion of free expression and media censorship.
“We spent the last few days with thoughtful conversations with Jimmy and after these interviews we reached the decision on Tuesday on Tuesday,” the network statement said.
What led to suspension
Kimmel who hosted Jimmy Kimmel Live! Since 2003 he has been suspended indefinitely after remarks in the monologue after Kirka’s death 10 September.
“Many in Maga Land are working very hard to earn Charlie Kirk’s murder … Gang Maga desperately tries to characterize the child who murdered Charlie Kirk like anything else than one of them,” Kimmel said.
The comments triggered immediate resistance, with ABC associated with NexStar and Sinclair pulled the show from its stations.
Political and industrial reactions
President Donald Trump weighed on social media, praised the suspension and called for the release of other hosts at night. Meanwhile, Hollywood gathered behind Kimmel.
“We have to fight to prevent and preserve our constitutionally protected rights,” said an open letter from more than 430 films, television and theater stars, including Robert de Nira, Meryl Streep, Jennifer Aniston and Lin-Manuel Miranda, coordinated by the US Civil Freedoms Union.
At the beginning of this year, Kimmel expressed concern about the possible government pressure on comics.
“Well, you would have to be naive so you don’t care a little. But it can’t change what you do,” Variety said.
FCC pressure
FCC chairman Brendan Carr publicly criticized Kimmel’s notes, warning networks before potential consequences.
“We can do this in an easy way or in a hard way … These companies can find ways to change behavior, act, frankly, to kimmel, or will be further work for FCC,” Carr said.
The observers noted that the suspension was time -consuming with wider pressures on the media environment, including Trump’s lawsuits and congress actions affecting public broadcasting such as NPR and PBS.
