Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren’s mother Roopi Soren dies

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s mother Roopi Soren passed away at a private hospital in Ranchi after prolonged illness. CM Soren shared the news of her sad demise in a post on his X social media account on Wednesday (October 7, 2026).

“After Baba left, Mom was my biggest shelter. Today even that shelter has merged with nature’s lap,” Mr. Soren wrote on X.

Roopi married former Chief Minister Shiba Soren on 1 January 1962 and was admitted to Hill View Hospital & Research Center on 18 September 2026 after complaining of breathing problems and was put on ventilator support on Wednesday (7 October 2026).

Leader of Opposition in Jharkhand Legislative Assembly Babulal Marandi expressed deep grief over her death.

“The news of the death of Chief Minister Hemant Sore’s mother has deeply saddened me. In this hour of grief, we offer our condolences to the bereaved. May the Lord grant a place at His holy feet to the departed soul and give the bereaved family strength to bear this immense grief,” wrote Mr. X. Marandi.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad and his son Tejashwi Yadav along with former chief minister Rabri Devi also expressed their grief over the demise.

“In this hour of grief, RJD stands with the bereaved family and we pray to God to give them strength to bear this unbearable pain,” RJD said in a press statement.

In a post on X, Jharkhand Congress leader and Health Minister Irfan Ansari said, “The extremely heartbreaking and soul-wrenching news of the death of the mother of the beloved Chief Minister of the state and my elder brother Hemant Soren ji, has shaken me to my core. It is an irreparable loss for Jharkhand. In this hour of my family, my entire family Soren and Im. the hospital alone in this time of grief.”

He further said, “This news has torn my heart from within. It is impossible to express this immense pain in words. May God rest the departed soul and give strength to my elder brother Hemant Soren ji and the entire Soren family to bear this immense grief.”

Roopi Soren and Shibu Soren have three sons and a daughter. The eldest son, Durga Soren, was a prominent leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and served as MLA from Jama; died in 2009.

Hemant Soren is the second son while the youngest son, Basant Soren, is the MLA from Dumka constituency. Their daughter, Anjani Soren, was also associated with JMM.
