India batsman Jemimah Rodrigues has said the team is more motivated than ever to add another global title to its growing collection, insisting that the squad’s hunger has intensified after last year’s maiden ODI World Cup triumph.
Ahead of India’s preparations for the Women’s T20 World Cup in England, Jemimah said winning one major ICC title only increased the group’s appetite for the next one.
“I think it’s a bit of motivation now. Since we won one, we want to win two,” Jemimah said, according to PTI.
“After winning the world championship you can get complacent, but this team is even hungrier to win again and again and again. That’s the plan and that’s the whole motive,” she added.
India will begin their preparations with a training camp at the BCCI Center of Excellence in Bengaluru from May 10 to 16 before flying to England to play a three-match T20I series against the hosts in preparation for the T20 World Cup. The tour will also include a one-off Test after the ICC event.
Jemimah, who led Delhi Capitals to their fourth Women’s Premier League final this season, also backed unseeded seamer Nandini Sharma to make the most of her first call-up in India.
Nandini, who was appointed in India’s 15-man squad alongside Bharti Fulmali, impressed at the WPL with her consistency and ability to serve under pressure and Jemimah said the young right-arm seamstress has already shown she belongs on the big stage.
“Nandini has been a great player for us throughout the WPL. To be honest when we got her we didn’t know what to expect, we knew she had talent,” said Jemimah.
“When she got on the bigger stage of the WPL in front of the world, she was consistent in the way she served, not just a five-goal streak, every game.
Jemimah added that India’s experienced core will help Nandini settle quickly in the national set-up.
“I know this team, they will welcome her, they will prepare her well and there is a lot of experience in this team that will bring out the best in her,” she said.
Head coach Amol Muzumdar echoed that confidence and said India’s preparations are firmly on course. Muzumdar emphasized that pre-tour camps have long been central to the team’s planning and said the squad is ready for the demands of the English summer.
“It has always been an integral part of this team. We believe we will prepare well for every challenge that lies ahead,” said Muzumdar.
He also pointed to India’s T20I series win in England last year as a big confidence booster and said the team has both the experience and the belief to mount another strong challenge at the World Cup.
