Delhi Capitals (DC) on Monday shared an exciting video announcing the announcement scheduled for Tuesday, December 23, to be unveiled at 6 PM on Star Sports and JioHotstar. The clip opens with a man exiting his house carrying a briefcase before putting it away.
Another masked individual then picks up the briefcase, drives off, and hands it to a third person who takes it into the building and places it in the trunk of the car. The sequence ends with the text message “It’s on its way” before the car closes.
Fans were quick to speculate and many assumed that Delhi Capitals were about to announce their new captain for the Women’s Premier League (WPL). Several fans tipped Jemimah Rodrigues as a likely choice for the role.
INDIAN CAPTAIN IN THE CAPITAL OF DELHI
The 25-year-old Jemimah has never captained the Indian team or the Delhi Capitals in the WPL. However, after Meg Lanning parted ways with the franchise and joined the UP Warriorz for the upcoming season, Jemimah emerged as one of the frontrunners for the role.
Laura Wolvaardt, who recently led South Africa to the Women’s World Cup final, was also in the mix after joining DC. However, Capitals owner Parth Jindal hinted that Jemimah could be the frontrunner, stating that the franchise was interested in appointing an Indian player as captain.
“We did what we could to get Meg but Wolvaardt will be a good addition and also bring leadership. The spin department looks very strong with (Shree) Charani and Sneh (Rana). We are clear that we want an Indian player as captain and we have made up our minds,” Jindal said.
Jemimah has been a regular with the bat for Delhi Capitals for the past three seasons. The young batsman amassed 507 runs in 27 matches at an average of 28.16 and a strike rate of 139.66, including three half-centuries, with a highest score of 69 not out.
Delhi Capitals will begin their campaign on January 10 against the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians at the Dr DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
