The Joint Committee of Trade Unions (JCTU) will hold a district-level conference in Kalaburagi on Sunday to highlight what it called the anti-work policies of the central and state governments.
CITU state general secretary S. Varalakshmi and AITUC district general secretary Prabhudev Yelasanghi said at a press conference in Kalaburagi on Thursday that the conference will discuss the nationwide agitation scheduled for February 12 against the implementation of the four labor codes by diluting the 29 existing central labor laws.
They said the four labor codes introduced by the Modi-led Union government undermine workers’ constitutional rights, curtail their right to protest, weaken labor standards and regulations, extend working hours from eight to 12 hours and introduce night shifts for women without adequate safeguards.
Ms Varalakshmi criticized the state government for not holding consultations with unions before framing labor regulations and standards. She said the regulations notified by the state government are even stricter than the regulations proposed by the Centre.
Pointing out that of the country’s nearly 46 million workers, about 40 million are in the unorganized sector, they said most of them are deprived of basic government benefits and social security, making them more vulnerable under the new labor laws.
It called upon labor, workers and trade unions to join a nationwide agitation to register their protest against the government’s anti-labour policies and labor reforms.
