The old waste at Jawahar Nagar’s municipal solid waste management facility has earned a dubious international accolade by earning a place among the top 25 detected and quantified emissions in the waste sector in the world.
As part of its “Stop Methane Project,” the University of California, Los Angeles collected data on emissions as seen by key satellite instruments and ranked the sites based on emission rates. Jawahar Nagar ranked fourth with an emission rate of 5.9 tonnes per hour, while the previous three slots were occupied by Buenos Aires, Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur with emission rates of 7.6 tonnes, 6.3 tonnes and 6 tonnes per hour respectively. Mumbai, at number 12, is the only other Indian city to make the list.
