WHY ARE JAPANESE FANS CLEANING THE STADIUMS?

Japanese fans have developed a global reputation for leaving stadiums cleaner than they entered.

The practice is based on a wider culture that emphasizes cleanliness, respect for shared spaces and collective responsibility. As a result, many Japanese fans see cleaning up after themselves as a normal part of attending a sporting event rather than an extraordinary gesture.

The tradition happened one of the most significant stories of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. After Japan stunned Germany 2-1 in one of the biggest upsets of the tournament, fans celebrated briefly before picking up litter around their part of the stadium.

Their actions attracted worldwide attention and many fans and media praised the example they set.

Perhaps more notably, Japanese supporters have also been seen cleaning up stadiums at matches not involving their own team, including the opening match between Qatar and Ecuador.

WHAT HAPPENED IN JAPAN VS THE NETHERLANDS?

Japan opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with an entertaining draw against the Netherlands in Dallas.

After a quiet first half ended goalless, the match came alive after the break. Virgil van Dijk put the Dutch in front before Japan responded with an equaliser. Crysencio Summerville restored the Netherlands’ advantage and seemingly steered them to victory.

However, the blue samurai refused to back down.

With just two minutes of normal time remaining, Daichi Kamada rose highest in the box to head home to give Japan a valuable Group F point.

The result boosted Japan’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages, while their supporters once again cemented their reputation as some of the most admired fans in world football.
