Japan Election 2026 Results LIVE Updates: Polls predict big majority for Sanae Takaichi’s party, predict 274 seats | Today’s news

February 8, 2026

Live updates of Japanese election results: Japanese voters cast their ballots amid heavy snowfall in a snap election called by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, with her ruling coalition expected to secure a clear victory.

Her party is poised to secure a large majority in Japan’s lower house, public broadcaster NHK predicts based on exit polls. Takaichi’s Liberal Democratic Party is expected to win between 274 and 328 of the 465 seats in the lower house, well above the 233 needed for a majority, according to NHK.

Takaichi announced the first mid-winter election in 36 years to run for public office soon after winning her party’s leadership last October.

The decision was widely seen as a gamble as her Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) lost its majority in both houses of parliament and her long-standing coalition with the Komeito party fell apart.
