CPI(M) leader and former higher education minister KT Jaleel criticized the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) for what he called its conflicting stances on issues including the PM-SHRI scheme.

In a Facebook post on Saturday (June 20), Mr. Jaleel said Kerala society would not accept what he called IUML’s “PM-SHRI mohabbat”.

The IUML opposed the PM-SHRI scheme when the Left Democratic Front (LDF) was in power, but is now reviewing its implementation after the United Democratic Front (UDF) returned to power, with IUML minister N. Shamsudheen holding the portfolio of general education.

The UDF has formed a four-member cabinet sub-committee, chaired by Mr. Shamsudheen, to look into the implementation of the scheme. Chief Minister VD Satheesan said the state could not give up central funds and would continue with PM-SHRI.

Mr. Jaleel accused the IUML of shifting positions depending on whether it was in the opposition or the government. He said the party raised community-related issues and rights claims when it was in opposition but changed its stance after coming to power.

“The Muslim League, in opposition, engages in identity politics, invoking religion and community interests. It opposes PM-SHRI, claims Munambam is Waqf land and demands more courses in Malappuram-aided schools. It also protests practices like lighting traditional lamps,” he said.

“When in power, Muslim League takes a different position. PM-SHRI becomes necessary, Munambam is not a Waqf land, Malappuram Plus-Two issue needs to be studied and even lighting of traditional lamp is accepted,” said Mr. Jaleel.
