Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday (March 23) and focused on the escalating situation in West Asia and its wider global impact.
In a post on X, Jaishankar said the discussion focused on the economic implications of the conflict, with a particular emphasis on energy supplies.
“Had a detailed phone call with US @SecRubio this evening. Our discussions focused on the conflict in West Asia and its impact on the international economy. We talked in particular about energy security issues. We agreed to stay in touch,” he wrote.
Focus on the Strait of Hormuz and energy flows
The talks come as tensions rise over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy corridor that handles nearly 20% of the world’s oil and LNG supplies.
Global oil and gas prices surged after Iran effectively curbed movement through the strategic route, raising concerns among major importers such as India.
Engagement with the Gulf Nations
Jaishankar also met with ambassadors from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)including envoys from Saudi Arabia, UAE, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait.
“They exchanged views on the conflict in West Asia. He thanked them for their continued support to the Indian community in the region,” he said.
Reaching out to regional and global partners
in addition Jaishankar held talks with Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath.
“They discussed the implications of conflict in West Asia. India is committed to #NeighbourhoodFirst and #VisionMAHASAGAR,” he said.
He also spoke with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul to exchange views on the developing situation.
Trump extends deadline, signals negotiations
Trump earlier said the US would delay potential strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure by five days, citing “productive talks” with Tehran.
The US president has said that efforts are underway to “fully and completely resolve” the conflict.
Iran denies negotiations with the US
However, Iran strongly denied claims of any talks.
Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf said on X: “There have been no negotiations with the US and fake news is being used to manipulate the financial and oil markets and to escape the quagmire in which the US and Israel are trapped.
He added that Iranian officials remain united in their stance: “The Iranian people demand full and remorseful punishment of the aggressors. All Iranian officials stand firmly behind their Supreme Leader and people until this goal is achieved.”
Global uncertainty is deepening
Conflicting narratives from Washington and Tehran underscore growing uncertainty about diplomatic efforts, even as the conflict continues to roil global energy markets and heighten geopolitical risks.
