YSR Congress Party President YS Jagan Mohan Reddy
YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Sunday slammed the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, citing Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) data for the first half of the 2025-26 fiscal year, which he said reveals a “very discouraging and worrying slowdown” in Andhra Pradesh’s revenue growth.
In a post on X, Mr Jagan said the numbers “reveal the tall claims made by the TDP and JSP during the elections”, particularly their assurances of rapid revenue growth under their administration.
According to CAG data, the state’s own tax revenue grew by just 7.03% year-on-year in the first six months of the 2025-26 fiscal year. More worrying, Mr. Jagan noted, was that GST and sales tax receipts — key indicators of consumption — grew by only 2.85% compared to the same period last year.
He further pointed out that over the two-year period (2023-24 to 2025-26), the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of own tax revenue is only 2.75%, which “paints an even bleaker picture”. Despite this, he said, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu was “misleading people” by claiming “stunning economic growth”, including 12.02% growth in gross state product (GSDP) in fiscal 2024-25 and a target of 17.1% in fiscal 2025-26 – figures he claimed were inconsistent with subdued revenues.
“Such high economic growth should normally be reflected in strong tax collection, ideally with a revenue CAGR of 12-15%, but the actual figure is only 2.75%,” he said. “The situation is even worse in capital expenditure, which has declined at a CAGR of 16% over the last two years, clearly showing that the government is not investing in long-term infrastructure or development.”
He added that the state’s own revenue grew by only 3.47% in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2025-26, while GST and sales tax collections fell below the corresponding quarter last year. “Yet Mr. Naidu is claiming 10.50% growth in GSDP for the same quarter. This is completely illogical,” he said.
Comparing this with the performance of the previous YSRCP government, Mr. Jagan said that between 2019 and 2024, the state’s own tax revenue grew at a CAGR of 9.87%, from ₹58,031 crore to ₹92,922 crore, while GSDP grew by 1-2% consistently at a CAGR of 3%.
“When revenue and economic growth have been aligned under our government, how can Mr. Naidu claim that the state is progressing fast despite negligible revenue growth?” he asked.
He further claimed that “the only thing galloping under the current regime is debt”, and claimed that the government had already contracted or availed loans totaling ₹2,06,959 crore – 62% of what the YSRCP government had borrowed in its entire five-year term. “This shows the financial recklessness of the current government. They are borrowing at breakneck speed without improving revenue or investing in development,” he said.
