I’ve lost my voice: Harry Kane revels as England oust Mexico in Aztec epic

Harry Kane had little to offer when he walked into the televised interview room after England’s thrilling 3-2 win over Mexico in the last 16 of the World Cup.

Kane scored the decisive penalty to help England survive a frantic 10-man finish before joining team-mates and fans in celebration at the Azteca Stadium. When the microphones were placed in front of him, his voice almost disappeared.

“My voice is gone,” Kane said during his post-match interview with the BBC. “It was a crazy game. We had to fight. We had to find something. I was just singing, I can’t really talk. The opportunity, the team, everything against us, we found a way.”

His voice sounded even weaker moments later during an interview with FOX. I can’t even talk,” Kane said with a laugh.

Mexico vs England, FIFA World Cup 2026: Highlighting

It was no surprise that Kane lost his voice. England have just come through one of the most dramatic games of the tournament, surviving a ferocious Mexican fightback to book their place in the World Cup quarter-finals.

Jude Bellingham’s quick double in the first half brought Thomas Tuchel under control before Julian Quinones pulled one back for the visitors just before the break. The game swung again early in the second half when Jarell Quansah was sent off following a VAR review, leaving England to play the final 36 minutes with 10 men.

Rather than retreat, England found another way to hurt Mexico. Anthony Gordon raced through on goal before being brought down by goalkeeper Raul Rangel, allowing Kane to calmly convert the penalty to restore his side’s two-goal advantage.

Mexico refused to surrender. Raul Jimenez converted the penalty after another VAR review before the hosts launched wave after wave of attacks in front of a packed Azteca Stadium. Jordan Pickford stood firm with a string of crucial saves as England dug deep to maintain their lead and end Mexico’s dream of winning the World Cup on home soil.

Looking back on the contest, Kane admitted England were pushed to their limits.

“I thought I got to the ball first,” he said of the penalty awarded. “It was one of those days. The referee gave a lot against us. It didn’t matter in the end, so I’m happy.”

After the final whistle, relief quickly gave way to celebration. The England players took to the traveling fans as the celebrations at the famous stadium gathered pace, “Wonderwall” and “Three Lions”.

By the time Kane reached the mixed zone, his voice had paid the price.

Tuchel said England’s mentality made the difference on a night when his side were repeatedly forced to dig deep.

“We needed everything and it was super difficult,” said the England manager. “Every time we thought we had momentum, we had setbacks. But that’s the right mentality. When the going gets tough, they never give up and never lose faith.”

England will now face Norway in the quarter-finals after emerging from one of the toughest tests of their World Cup campaign, with Kane’s husky voice serving as the perfect reminder of how much the win meant.
