The Indian EU Muslim League (IUML) and Congress, two important components of United Democratic Front (UDF) disagreed against each other in the upcoming elections of the local body.
Discussion at a high level between the leader of the opposition VD Satheesan and Iuml leaders, including State President Syed Sadikali Shihab Thang and National Secretary -General PK Kunhalikutty, paved the way to agreement between Congress and Iuml.
Congress and Iuml, despite their long -term alliance at national level, had the history of intensive rivalry at local level, especially in parts of the Malappuram district. This rivalry, rooted in historical differences, has often led to rebellious candidates or competitions outside UDF.
The rivalry escalated to the point where Congress was looking for the left democratic front (LDF) supporting iuml in some areas, while Iuml did the same against the congress in others.
The non -enthusiasm between Congress and Iuml gave rise to groups of locally referred to as “sambar munnani”, a colloquial term referring to an alliance consisting of various, often heterogeneous elements, similar to mixed components in the sambar.
Iuml and Congress agreed to prioritize merit as the only criterion for the selection of candidates. According to IUML reports, Congress asked to refrain from storing candidates based on a group association inside the party.
Iuml and Congress are optimistic that by working in all Panchayatta and municipalities, UDF can win three quarters of seats in the Malappuram district.
