Ruturaj Gaikwad admitted that Chennai Super Kings now face a straightforward but high-pressure equation in IPL 2026 following their seven-wicket defeat to Lucknow Super Giants. The loss left CSK in sixth place in the points table with six wins and six defeats from 12 matches, significantly complicating their hopes of making the play-offs. Chennai now probably need to win both their remaining league matches while also keeping a close eye on the Net Run Rate to stay alive in the fight for the top four.Speaking after the match during the post-match presentation, Gaikwad remained calm despite the setback and insisted that the qualification scenario was “simple” for his side going forward.”Well, the first challenge is to get to Chennai. It’s a long flight. After that, just make sure we go back and improve what are the areas we need to improve and yes, try to adapt and evaluate the conditions as quickly as possible and it’s a simple calculation for us. Win every game how many games we play. So I think nothing simple. I mean, it’s simple, nothing complicated. So here it is quite easy for us. There is nothing to fear. Just make sure we have a good day. Let that apply to anyone having a good day and we hope we hope to turn things around,” Gaikwad said.
Lucknow outperformed Chennai
Chennai Super Kings suffered a major setback in the playoffs after a seven-wicket defeat to Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Stadium. In his first match of IPL 2026, left-arm pacer Akash Singh played for LSG with figures of 3/26 as he dismissed Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sanja Samson and Urvil Patel with crisp short bowling on a lively surface. ČSK struggled early on and managed only 37/2 in the power play.Despite a fighting 71 off 42 balls from Kartik Sharma, CSK failed to put enough pressure on Lucknow. In response, Australian openers Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis dominated the chase with a brilliant 135 in just 11.4 overs. Marsh smashed 90 off 38 balls, including four consecutive sixes off Anshul Kamboj in a brutal over that effectively sealed the match.Nicholas Pooran later completed the chase in the 17th as LSG comfortably completed the win.
