‘It’s a Medical Miracle’ movie review: A slick experiment let down by a lackluster script

It’s a Medical Miracle presents a fascinating premise: Brought to life with grounded sincerity by Sangeeth Prathap, Rubin wakes up from a long coma thanks to a sonic superpower. Able to detect distant conversations and hidden sounds, he finds his world irrevocably altered. Intent on tracking down the nurse who was taking care of him, his path crosses with Sooraj (Sharafudheen), sending the film into an erratic sequence of events. The film comes with an ambitious framework that attempts a crazy mix of supernatural, suspense, comedy and drama but struggles to keep its footing. While the unusual concept and clear effort behind the production is evident, the overall theatrical experience is just as disappointing as its title – it completely misses the film’s atmosphere.

Director Shyamin Gireesh maintains a smooth flow despite minor flaws, but the script unfortunately loses its grip all too soon. She’s a particularly frustrating miss on the comedy front. The premise, built around a guy trapped by unwanted superhearers, calls for clever, messy humor, but the script doesn’t quite take advantage of it. While there are some adorable, light-hearted conversations sprinkled throughout, the film fails to find a single truly hilarious moment. Similarly, the thriller plot lacks depth, acting as flimsy duct tape to hastily hold the story together.

Since the main plot relies so heavily on sound to create tension, the audio landscape is forced to do some heavy lifting. The result is a double-edged sword that dictates the theater experience from start to finish. Although the audio layering manages to increase the narrative dynamic at certain points, it occasionally becomes overwhelming to the ears. Despite its shaky foundations, the film is largely saved from sliding into utter mediocrity by the heartfelt commitment of its lead actors. Sangeeth Prathap handles his character’s bizarre sensory overload with a quiet, disarming vulnerability that grounds the entire supernatural premise in authenticity. He gets equally solid support from Sharafudheen, who adds much-needed texture to the run through his comic timing and subtle expressions. Akhila Bhargavan also gives a solid supporting performance that does the job without rocking the boat.

At the end of the day, It’s a Medical Miracle wastes a solid cast and some really great ideas on a script that just couldn’t make it through the finish line. It’s a frustratingly polished, well-acted experiment that needed a much bolder and tighter script to really leave a mark.
