The Indo-Tibetan Border Police, which guards the 3,488-km long India-China LAC, is setting up 10 border posts for women along the tough and icy border, the director general of the paramilitary force said.
The force, as part of its ambitious ‘handover’ plan initiated after the 2020 military clash in Ladakh, has also so far moved its 215 border posts forward along the front on India’s northern and eastern flanks.
Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) DG Praveen Kumar said this during the 64th Raising Day parade held in Jammu on Saturday (November 22, 2025).
“We have been working on a forward plan and the result is that the number of pre-deployed BOPs (Border Posts) is now 215 compared to 180.
“The establishment of seven new battalions and a sector headquarters not only strengthened this plan (handover) but also strengthened our reach and surveillance of forward areas…,” the headquarters said.
The Center has approved seven more battalions and a sector office with about 9,400 personnel for the ITBP in 2023.
The DG said the force will establish 41 more such forward bases along the India-China Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the near future to “enhance security and coordination”.
As part of strengthening the role of women fighters, ITBP is setting up two all-female BOPs in Ladakh’s Lukung and Thangi in Himachal Pradesh.
Eight more all-female BOPs will be commissioned on this front, the directorate general said.
The ITBP chief said the force’s training institutions have been “reorganized” and five new skill modules have been launched for soldiers, including topics such as mountain warfare and tactical survival.
ITBP, with a workforce of over one million personnel, has its border crossings between 9,000 feet and over 14,000 feet, which are affected by inclement weather and low oxygen levels.
Established in 1962, the force functions under the command of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
