A viral video of over a dozen Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel surrounding the office of the Kanpur Commissioner of Police on Saturday (May 23, 2026) sparked an uproar as their commander stepped inside to meet senior police officials seeking justice for the mother of an ITBP constable whose hand was amputated at a private nursing home due to alleged medical negligence.

Opposition parties and social media users on Saturday (May 23) slammed the Kanpur administration for saying such scenes point to a complete failure of the judicial system, forcing paramilitary personnel to go on a token protest.

The ITBP personnel accused doctors at a private hospital of negligence, which allegedly led to the amputation of his mother’s right hand. He demanded a fair investigation and strict action against the hospital management and the doctors involved.

Kanpur police said the matter has been sent to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for re-investigation.

“A few days ago, an ITBP soldier filed a petition in the hospital alleging medical negligence, including the amputation of his mother’s hand. As the case related to medical negligence, the matter was referred to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for investigation in accordance with the orders of the Hon’ble Supreme Court. As per the rules of the CMO, a committee of inquiry was set up against the complainant and the inquiry case came up again with his superiors. He raised objections on some points in the report, the objection request has been sent to the CMO’s office for re-investigation, as the case involves medical negligence and the treatment process, it is necessary for medical experts to examine all aspects of treatment, diagnosis and medical procedures, a decision will be made based on any facts that emerge from the investigation,” Kanda said.
