Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy said the state government would organize the biennial Medaram Sammakka-Saralamma Jatara, billed as the largest tribal congregation in Asia, on the lines of the Kumbh Mela.
Addressing a cultural event near the Sammakka-Saralamma shrine in Medaram after presiding over the cabinet meeting on Sunday, the Chief Minister said that the development work at Medaram Gaddel and the Sammakka-Saralamma tribal shrine have been completed with all necessary facilities and have been opened to the public. He said the work, including stone structures and basic infrastructure, was completed within 100 days before the festival, adding that the renovated shrine would be inaugurated on Monday (January 19).
Mr. Revanth Reddy described the Medaram Jatara as a historic event symbolizing courage transformed into divinity and noted that it was Telangana’s largest tribal festival, characterized by deity worship without a temple structure.
Calling it his good fortune to be associated with the development of Medaram, Mr. Revanth Reddy said arrangements have been made to ensure continuous flow of water in Jampanna Vag by diverting water from Ramappa and Laknavaram reservoirs.
In the first, the state cabinet met in Medaram near Hyderabad on Sunday and passed several resolutions. Recalling the legacy of Sammakka and Saralamma, who led the rebellion against the Kakatiya rulers, the Chief Minister said the festival was a reminder of their resistance and sacrifices.
The Chief Minister also referred to his padayatra that started from Medaram on February 6, 2023 and said it was undertaken with the determination to unseat the then ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi. He said that the Congress came to power with the blessings of the goddesses.
