Israel accepted a new American proposal for a temporary ceasefire with Hamas, and the White House confirmed on Thursday, May 29, which called the potential breakthrough in long -term negotiations to end the war in Gaza and ensure the release of hostages.
The press secretary of the White House Karoline Leavitt said that Israel “supported and supported” the proposal, and at the same time noted that “Hamas continues to evaluate this proposal”.
The new momentum comes after a special ambassador of US President Donald Trump Steve Witkoff at the beginning of this week optimism that it would be possible to conclude an agreement to stop the fight and return the hostage.
Hamas open to the “general framework”
Hamas signaled cautiously openness to the new plan and stated that he had achieved an agreement with US officials on a “general framework” that could lead to a permanent ceasefire, complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and handing over the independent Palestinian authority.
The group emphasized that they only release 58 hostages that still hold-I have worried about the dead-changed for a permanent ceasefire, extensive release of prisoners and guarantees for reconstruction and gauze management.
Israeli goals with a clash with Hamas Requirements
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ruled out a complete ceasefire or withdrawal until Hamas is removed and all hostages are not liberated. It insists on the vague Israeli control of Gaza and proposed voluntary emigration of parts of the population – a step that many in the international community claim to violate international law.
Hamas, on the other hand, insists on a complete Israeli withdrawal and at the end of the war and offers a transfer of power to the politically independent Palestinian committee.
Inside the design of the ceasefire
Although the whole plan remains unpublished, officials familiar with the negotiations claim that this includes:
60 -day stop in fighting
Phase edition 10 live hostages and several bodies
Release of more than 1100 Palestinian prisoners, including 100 convicted of fatal attacks
Daily Delivery of Hundreds of Humanitarian Aid trucks
Israeli forces returning to positions that take place during the ceasefire march
Critically, the proposal includes guarantees that Israel will not continue the fight immediately after the hostage – the key point in previous negotiations.
Why do the conversations still fail
The effort to end the war has repeatedly stopped the basic disagreements: Israel only wants a temporary ceasefire to ensure the release of the hostage while Hamas insists at the lasting end of the conflict. Interviews mediated by the US, Egypt and Qatar have stretched for more than 18 months without permanent agreement.
October 7, 2023, an attack led by Hamas on South Israel killed approximately 1,200 people and saw 251 hostages. In response, Israel launched a devastating military campaign that killed more than 54,000 Palestinians, displaced nearly 90% of the 2 million Gaza populations and reduced a large part of the territory to trosphs.
Political pressure on Netanyahu
Prime Minister Netanyahu also navigates intensive political pressures. His far -right coalition partners warned that he would collapse his government if he agreed to end the war and potentially exposes him to restored legal threats over long -term accusations of corruption and the treatment of attack 7 October.

Fear of reviving Hamas
Israeli officials are afraid that Hamas will leave Hamas politically and socially rooted in Gaza. Although the group gives up formal control, they claim that it could re -build its military capacity and eventually carry out new attacks.
Permanent peace still elusive
While the current proposal offers hope for a break in violence, wider level remains distant. The Palestinian leadership remains broken, and the Netanyahu government rejects the idea of the Palestinian state in Gaza, the West Bank, or the eastern Jerusalem.
