A minor clash broke out between United Democratic Front (UDF) and Left Democratic Front (LDF) activists at Kallachi in Nadapuram panchayat on Thursday following allegations of double voting. Tension prevailed in the area when a group of UDF activists challenged the entry of a student voter on the basis of an alleged attempt at double voting.
Local police and rapid response units arrived at the scene to disperse the enraged protesters. LDF activists alleged that the “unwanted controversy” had ruined the chance of the student, who had come all the way from Bengaluru to Kozhikode district, to exercise her right. They also alleged that the UDF workers were not ready to accept the instructions of the presiding officer.
Meanwhile, local UDF activists alleged that there were “confirmed attempts” of double voting by LDF supporters in Nadapuram grama panchayat.
There were also isolated incidents of clashes between LDF and UDF workers in Vellayil. In Beypore, LDF workers lashed out at Bharatiya Janata Party workers, alleging that they had attempted fake voting.
Safety measures
Meanwhile, senior police officers in charge of security said the vote was generally peaceful with strategic deployment of forces covering all sensitive areas. A total of 7,500 police personnel were monitoring the security arrangements in Kozhikode district on Thursday.
Around 3,000 policemen were on duty in Kozhikode alone, including members of the Rapid Action Force. As more sensitive booths have been placed in rural areas of Kozhikode, security has been beefed up with 4,500 policemen deployed.
There were also special forces and civilians monitoring village areas where the presence of Maoists had been previously confirmed by various special investigation teams. The areas included Thottilpalam, Koorachundu, Valayam and Peruvannamuzhi.
