Is there a threat of an increase in bus fares?: The committee is asking for objections and suggestions

The committee issued a public notice in this regard on Saturday, taking a step closer to increasing fares as recently hinted by Transport Minister Byrathi Suresh.

The newly formed Karnataka Public Transport Fare Regulation Committee (KPTFRC), a body on the lines of the Namma Metro Fare Fixation Committee, has sought views and suggestions from the public on the proposed bus fare revision.

The committee issued a public notice in this regard on Saturday, taking a step closer to increasing fares as recently hinted by Transport Minister Byrathi Suresh.

This is the first time that such a bus fare revision committee has been formed in the state. The committee is headed by former IAS officer Atul Kumar Tiwari.

Mr. Suresh recently said that the Union government had hiked fuel prices several times, but the state-run Road Transport Corporations (RTCs) were providing services at the old rates, resulting in a loss of ₹8,000 to ₹10,000 per year to the four corporations.

“Once the committee submits its report, we will submit it to the Cabinet and get approval for the fare revision,” Mr. Suresh said in August.

“The state government has appointed the chairman and members of the KPTFRC. The committee has been given the responsibility to study the financial conditions of all the road transport corporations and from time to time suggest revision of various tariffs and propose various surcharges, fare charges to improve the financial and operational efficiency of all the four road transport corporations in the state,” read a public notice issued by the committee on Saturday.

All the four corporations have already submitted their proposals to the committee for fare revision “as a result of revision of diesel/fuel rate, increase in salaries of the employees of the corporations to continue to provide quality and safe transport services to the traveling public at affordable rates and comply with social obligations,” the notice said.

Objections and suggestions can be submitted to the Chairman, Karnataka Public Transport Fare Regulation Committee, Sarige Bhavan, KSRTC, Central Office, Shanti Nagar, Bangalore 560027, by post or through the web link by 21 September.
