Rohit Sharma again missed out on a place in the Mumbai Indians playing XI against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL) match on Wednesday as the former skipper continues to recover from injury. The five-time IPL-winning captain pulled his hamstring against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on April 12, after which he walked off injured.
Since then, it has been 17 days since Rohit last played for Mumbai Indians, missing four consecutive matches – Punjab Kings, Gujarat Titans, Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad. As a result, Mumbai Indians were forced to hand Denmark’s Malewar a debut, but the move did not work.
Sharing the latest update on Rohit, Pandya said the 38-year-old will miss a few more matches before reaching match fitness. “Rohit will take a few more matches. He has tried, he is not exactly where he wants to be, so he is not available for the team,” Pandya said after winning the toss against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Since his injury, Rohit has hit the net a few times since then, but the team’s position has not changed. “Rohit has continued to progress but any call for his inclusion in Wednesday’s match will be taken at the draw,” a Mumbai Indians spokesperson said on Tuesday.
The former MI captain was present during the team’s training session at the Wankhede Stadium. Accompanied by two members of the support staff, he warmed up lightly, jogged and chatted for a long time before finally leaving the field. He had no batting.
Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians made a few changes to the playing XI. Quinton de Kock, who scored a century against Punjab Kings, was on the bench after the South African injured his wrist in practice. Ryan Rickelton replaces him. Jharkhand’s left-arm opener Robin Minz replaced Krish Bhagat.
Trent Boult and Will Jacks came in for the injured Mitchell Santner and Sherfane Rutherford. Sunrisers Hyderabad made one change, bringing in Harsh Dubey to replace Shivang Kumar.

A do or die situation for Mumbai Indians
With just two wins and five losses in seven matches, Mumbai Indians are languishing at the bottom of the IPL 2026 points table. With seven matches remaining in the league phase, Mumbai Indians need to win at least six of the remaining matches to be in contention for the playoffs.
A loss against Sunrisers Hyderabad today would further jeopardize their chances of securing a last four spot after the league stage.
